David Harewood OBE

(born December 8, 1965) is a celebrated British actor, director, and presenter, currently serving as president of the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Known for his powerful and versatile roles, Harewood has captivated audiences with standout performances as the CIA Counterterrorism Director David Estes in

and the dual roles of J'onn J'onzz / Martian Manhunter and Hank Henshaw / Cyborg Superman in

Born and raised in Birmingham to Barbadian parents, Harewood's journey to stardom began with a passion for the arts that he developed during his time with the National Youth Theatre. He secured a spot at RADA at 18 and quickly made a name for himself in both film and television. Notably, in 1997, he became the first Black actor to play Othello at the National Theatre in London—a groundbreaking achievement.

Over the years, Harewood has starred in a wide range of films and TV series, including critically acclaimed British dramas and popular US shows. His acting credits also include portraying historical figures like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr., further cementing his reputation for tackling complex, meaningful roles. Harewood's talents extend beyond the screen, as he has also voiced characters in major video games and has taken on producing and directing roles.

A committed advocate for mental health awareness, Harewood has shared his own struggles with psychosis in the BAFTA-nominated documentary

In addition, his activism has extended into race relations, as he continues to highlight the legacy of slavery and call for governmental apologies for Britain’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade—a cause personal to him, given his ancestral connection to a plantation owned by the Earl of Harewood.

Appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to drama and charity, Harewood continues to inspire both on and off the screen.
